Ukrainian president seeks to extend martial law, mobilisation in country

14 July 2025 14:36

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has submitted proposals to extend both martial law and the general mobilisation in Ukraine for another 90 days, as the country continues to defend itself against Russia’s full-scale invasion.

Two draft laws — No. 13471 and No. 13472 — have been registered on the website of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, Caliber.Az reports per a Ukrainian Telegram channel

The bills seek parliamentary approval to prolong the state of martial law and nationwide mobilisation efforts from August 7 to November 5, 2025. The current measures are set to expire on August 6.

Martial law was first introduced in Ukraine in February 2022, immediately following Russia’s invasion, and has been periodically extended since. It establishes a special legal regime designed to protect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in times of war or external threat.

Under martial law, authorities are granted expanded powers, allowing for tighter coordination among military commanders, local administrations, and civilian leadership. The framework enables more efficient defence operations and helps ensure public safety in areas at risk.

The proposed extension still requires approval from the Verkhovna Rada before it can take effect.
