Moldova considers energy emergency amid rising fuel, gas prices

Moldovan President Maia Sandu has called for urgent measures to address growing energy and hydrological challenges, warning that the global energy crisis is putting pressure on the country’s access to water, fuel and gas.

Sandu highlighted rising gas and fuel prices, as well as declining water levels in Moldova’s rivers, which have contributed to higher electricity prices.

Against this backdrop, Sandu said a state of emergency should be introduced in the energy and hydrological sectors.

She also called on state authorities to secure additional import capacity and alternative electricity supply routes to ensure the continuity of energy supplies.

Sandu stressed the need to build reserves of equipment and spare parts that could be used to respond to potential technical failures and emergencies.

The president also said Moldova should maintain emergency reserves of petroleum products as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s energy security.
