Ukraine pursues additional fighter jets for air superiority
Ukraine received its first F-16s from allies over the summer, but these are insufficient for achieving air superiority over Russia.
In response, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov announced during a telethon that the country is in negotiations for two additional types of Western fighter jets, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media.
Umerov explained that discussions are underway to clarify the number of aviation brigades and aircraft Ukraine requires. He noted that last year focused on pilot training and infrastructure development, while this year aimed to secure air superiority.
"We have commitments from our partners regarding F-16s and Mirages. Consultations are also ongoing for Gripen and Eurofighter jets. This is a promising list of platforms," the minister stated.
He highlighted that Russian forces are deploying up to 300 planes and helicopters in their military operations against Ukraine, emphasizing the need for advanced platforms and weapons to enhance Ukraine's air capabilities.
"We will have results to announce soon. Hopefully, we will report further progress," Umerov added.
Additionally, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed plans to increase the F-16 fleet, indicating a clear strategy for expanding combat aircraft numbers and accelerating pilot training.
France is also modernizing some Mirage 2000-5 fighter jets for transfer to Ukraine. These aircraft will be adapted at Cazeau airbase to engage ground targets effectively.
Furthermore, Ukraine is expected to receive medium-range cruise missiles for the F-16s, likely included in a $375 million military aid package from the United States.
