UN General Assembly president pleased with Azerbaijan's Non-Aligned Movement chairmanship
The President of the current, 78th session of the UN General Assembly, former Prime Minister and Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the UN, Dennis Francis, has thanked Azerbaijan for its fruitful activities during the three-year chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
According to the American bureau of Report, speaking at a meeting of the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement, held at the UN headquarters in New York at the ambassadorial level, Francis spoke about the large-scale measures taken by Azerbaijan during the three-year chairmanship of the NAM.
During a meeting on September 12 with the Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the UN, Yashar Aliyev, Francis also thanked him for his contribution to the activities of the NAM.
He underlined the contribution of NAM over the 60-year period of activity to the work of the UN in the field of peace and security, sustainable development and human rights, and emphasized the importance of the organisation in resolving various global issues.
“In seeking solutions to the various problems that concern us, I urge you to continue to count on the support of the Coordination Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement. The geopolitical situation is hindering faith in multilateralism, too many conflicts and instability are leading to a significant lag in the achievement of sustainable development goals, and the consequences of pandemics and climate change continue to take their toll on people," Francis said.
He added that at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, these issues should concern all.
"I will especially rely on the Non-Aligned Movement and focus on my four mottos: peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability,” he noted.
