US expands military presence in Finland to boost joint defence cooperation
The United States has increased its military footprint in Finland since mid-July, as part of a broader effort to enhance bilateral defence cooperation and interoperability, the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) announced.
According to the FDF statement, American troops have been deployed to key Finnish military units, including the Uusimaa Brigade and the Coastal Brigade, Caliber.Az reports, citing Finnish media.
Additional US forces have also joined the Karelia Brigade, where they are conducting training sessions with Finnish personnel focused on the use and maintenance of US-supplied equipment.
These joint activities are designed to strengthen operational coordination between the two countries, particularly within the framework of collective defence.
“We will keep up our own ability to defend our country and be responsible for Finland's military defence. Finland cannot, however, stand alone and isolate itself. In the current security environment, cooperation is indispensable,” said Major General Sami Nurmi in a statement.
The FDF noted that American troops and military equipment will be visible in areas beyond traditional garrisons and training zones, as movement across the country is part of ongoing and upcoming drills.
“You may come across American troops and equipment across Finland. They are welcome. We may not be famous for great small talk skills, but nodding or smiling is good enough, if you see troops in the street,” Nurmi added, offering a light-hearted message to the Finnish public.
Further joint military exercises between Finland and the United States are planned for various regions later this year, though exact dates and locations have not yet been disclosed. A large-scale, multinational drill involving all branches of the Finnish Armed Forces is scheduled for late 2025, marking a significant step in deepening military integration between Helsinki and Washington.
