US, South Korea sign landmark nuclear deterrence agreement
The United States and South Korea finalized a historic document on July 11 outlining nuclear deterrence principles, warning of a robust retaliation against any catastrophic attack on South Korea.
Signed on the sidelines of the NATO summit, this agreement follows the establishment of the joint Nuclear Consultative Group in April 2023, which has been instrumental in developing the deterrence framework, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
US President Joe Biden and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol underscored the significance of this milestone, emphasizing the deepening of strategic alliance and mutual defence commitments between their nations. They affirmed their shared commitment to peace, stability, and the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
"The NCG has enabled collaborative US-South Korea nuclear and strategic planning to safeguard the safety and security of the South Korean people and US service members stationed on the peninsula, amid escalating nuclear threats from North Korea," the presidents stated in a joint statement.
The newly signed document provides guidelines for military leaders from both countries, aimed at bolstering a credible and effective nuclear deterrence policy and posture.
