US threatens Georgia with sanctions over democracy concerns
15 May 2024 09:46
The US has warned Georgia of potential sanctions if it is found to undermine democracy while adopting the law on foreign agents, according to Lenta.ru.
"If the law on foreign agents moves forward without harmonization with EU norms and results in undermining democracy, including violence against peaceful protesters, the US will impose sanctions. These will include financial and travel restrictions on those responsible and their families," US Assistant Secretary of State James O'Brien stated.
It should be noted that on May 14, Georgian lawmakers passed the bill in the third reading. President Zourabichvili vowed to veto the bill.
