US urges China to set disputes with India aside amid G20 summit
During a press briefing at the White House, Security Adviser Jake Sullivan stated that it was up to China "to play the role of a spoiler" amid the upcoming G20 summit.
As reported by BBC, the US official urged China to set aside its issues with India and play a "constructive role" at the bloc's annual gathering on September 9-10 in the Indian capital New Delhi.
He made those remarks following Beijing's announcement that Leader Xi Jinping will not be attending this year's summit.
Although no specific reason was given as to why China would be represented by its Prime Minister, the relationship between India and China has deteriorated over the years, with tensions rising since 2020 when their troops were involved in a deadly clash at the Galwan valley in Ladakh along a disputed stretch of the Sino-Indian border along the Himalayas.
The publication recalls a diplomatic dispute between the two countries after China released a map last week, which India recognized as being a territorial claim. Beijing responded by saying that Delhi should refrain from "over-interpreting" the issue.
