Volunteers from 55 countries join Ukraine's foreign legion
Volunteers from 55 countries from all continents have joined the International Legion created in Ukraine in connection with Russia's attack.
The representative of the International Legion of Defence of Ukraine, Damien Magru, made the statement at a briefing, Ukrinform reports.
"We have representatives from 55 countries from all continents, even as far away as Brazil, South Korea, Australia," Magru said.
He informed that Americans and Britons are the most in the legion, followed by Poles and Canadians, and then representatives of different countries. In particular, quite a large number are from the Baltic States and the Nordic countries, among which the representative of the International Legion singled out Finland.
Magru declined to name the total number of legionnaires, citing confidentiality of information.
Asked about funding, he noted that the International Legion is part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and is funded from the defence budget.
"This applies to all living expenses, salaries of fighters, weapons and ammunition. We have additional charitable funds from private donors, primarily Western ones. We spend the funds collected on various platforms exclusively on equipment for our fighters, which is not included in the standard military package issued by the Ukrainian Armed Forces and is necessary on the battlefield, but is not funded through state channels of Ukraine," the representative of the International Legion said.
