Future of armored warfare: AbramsX promises bold new era for US military
The AbramsX, a potential next-generation upgrade of the M1 Abrams tank, promises to revolutionise US armored warfare.
Although it remains a technology demonstrator without official orders, General Dynamics insists that the tank is ready for deployment at any time. As the US Army looks towards the future, the AbramsX’s capabilities have raised comparisons to its likely adversary on the battlefield, the Russian T-80BVM.
Unveiled by General Dynamics Land Systems in 2022, the AbramsX incorporates cutting-edge features such as an unmanned turret, AI-driven systems, and drone-launching capabilities. Designed to become the US Army’s newest main battle tank, the AbramsX builds on the M1 Abrams legacy while introducing several modern upgrades, including a hybrid diesel-electric engine for enhanced fuel efficiency and a quieter operation. Weighing around 60 tons, it can achieve speeds of up to 45 mph on roads.
In comparison, the T-80BVM, an evolution of the Soviet-era T-80, continues to be an effective combat vehicle. Powered by a GTD-1250 gas turbine engine, the T-80BVM can reach speeds of 43 mph and remains a formidable contender. Its compact design offers logistical advantages, and its low profile makes it more suited to operate in muddy conditions than heavier tanks.
In terms of firepower, the AbramsX is armed with a next-gen 120mm cannon capable of firing advanced rounds and an autoloader system. It also features a 30mm automatic cannon and a 7.62mm coaxial machine gun. The T-80BVM, on the other hand, is equipped with a 125mm smoothbore gun and can launch anti-tank guided missiles like the 9M119M Refleks.
Both tanks are equipped with advanced protection systems. The AbramsX includes the Trophy active protection system, thermal sights, and advanced sensors for enhanced situational awareness. The T-80BVM uses Relikt explosive reactive armor, smoke grenade launchers, and laser warning systems to conceal its position during battle.
While the T-80BVM remains a solid choice, particularly with its modern upgrades, the AbramsX clearly outshines its older counterpart with superior technology and combat capabilities. The T-80, a product of the 1980s, represents a different era in tank design and warfare, while the AbramsX is geared towards the future of armored combat.
