Russia-Ukraine war may push over 20 million people into poverty: UN

16 August 2022 17:20

The Russia-Ukraine war may force nearly 20 million people into extreme poverty, the UN report "On Sustainable Development Goals for 2022" says.

Gazeta.ru reports citing the report that 656.7 million people would be living on less than $1.90 per day worldwide in 2022. At the same time, this figure could increase to 676.5 million people due to rising food prices and the "broader consequences" of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that the Russian-Ukrainian conflict has not only triggered skyrocketing prices for food, fuel, and fertilizers but also "disrupted supply chains and global trade and caused problems in financial markets."
