Protests held against construction of munitions plant in Germany

Hundreds of people in Germany protested against the construction of a new Rheinmetall projectile plant in the federal state of Lower Saxony.

A police spokesman said the demonstration was peaceful. Hundreds of people took part in the protest, including farmers, who brought about 300 tractors to the access roads to the village of Unterlüss and blocked all surrounding roads, the German television channel NTV reports citing local police.

Several dozen people took part in a similar action in Südheide. The protesters are protesting “against the policy of arms and war” and calling on the government to “act in a de-escalatory manner.”

The ceremony of laying the first stone at the construction site should be attended by Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.
