Orban slams West's handling of Ukraine crisis, calls for accountability

17 October 2024 21:09

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized Western countries for their handling of the situation in Ukraine, asserting that they have found themselves at a disadvantage and emphasizing the need to identify those responsible for this predicament.

Orban noted that the West has treated the conflict as if it were its own war, resulting in a losing position, Caliber.Az reports via German media.

“When you examine the military dynamics on the front lines and the operational capabilities of both sides, it becomes clear that we are currently at a disadvantage,” he stated.

Earlier, Orban had voiced his discontent with the European Union's approach to the Ukraine crisis, arguing that Europe's involvement is misguided and detrimental to its own interests. He believes that the EU's excessive support for Ukraine has only entangled Europe further in a conflict that does not directly concern it.

“I criticize European policy because it prioritizes Ukrainian positions over our own interests. This alignment only deepens our involvement in the conflict. It is not in Europe’s interest to escalate the situation; rather, we should seek ways to bring about a resolution. Unfortunately, we are becoming participants in this war. This is not our conflict,” Orban asserted.

His comments reflect a broader scepticism regarding the EU’s role in the crisis and align with his previous diplomatic efforts. In July 2024, Orban initiated a "peace mission" to Ukraine and Russia to mediate between the two nations and advocate for a ceasefire. This initiative was part of Hungary’s broader diplomatic strategy to address the conflict and mitigate its negative effects on European stability. During this mission, Orban met with key officials from both countries, reiterating Hungary’s stance that Europe should not be drawn into the conflict and should instead pursue diplomatic solutions.

Furthermore, Orban has consistently maintained that Russia does not pose a direct security threat to Europe, asserting, “If Europe has chosen to become involved in this conflict, Hungary does not share that viewpoint.”
