EU to weigh Musk's additional enterprises in potential fine against X
The European Union has cautioned that it may calculate potential fines against X, the social media platform owned by Elon Musk, by considering revenue from Musk’s other ventures, such as SpaceX and Neuralink.
This move could considerably increase the fines for breaching content moderation regulations, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), platforms can face fines of up to 6% of their global annual revenue for failing to address illegal content or disinformation.
Authorities are now weighing whether revenue from Musk’s other companies, including xAI and The Boring Company, should be included in the calculation of any fines. However, Tesla’s revenue is likely to be excluded as it is a publicly-traded company.
The European Commission is investigating X for several potential violations of the DSA, though no final decision on penalties has been made.
The platform could avoid fines if it addresses the regulator’s concerns, but any fine imposed would be decided by Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s digital chief.
X has not commented on the investigation, but Musk has previously indicated he would contest any fines in court.
