Hungarian FM warns Ukraine's NATO membership could spark world war
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has expressed grave concerns regarding Ukraine's potential membership in NATO, suggesting that it could trigger a global conflict.
Addressing a session of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Hungarian parliament, Szijjártó labelled Ukraine's accession to the alliance as a "dangerous line" that could escalate tensions significantly, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The minister emphasized that Hungary has communicated its position clearly to both the European Union leadership and other member states, stating, "Ukraine's membership in NATO is behind the red line simply because Ukraine continues to be at war with Russia. If Ukraine were to become a NATO member, a world war would break out."
Szijjártó further elaborated on Hungary's stance by opposing the deployment of European military instructors to Ukraine, citing historical precedents where the arrival of foreign military advisers has often exacerbated conflicts. He asserted, "I remember from history that very often bad things started precisely with the arrival of military advisers to the place of conflict, so we do not support this."
