Russia, Iran, China to hold naval drills in Strait of Hormuz

17 February 2026 12:34

Russia, Iran and China have deployed naval vessels to take part in upcoming maritime exercises, known as “Maritime Security Belt 2026”, in the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement was made by Russian Presidential Aide and Chairman of the Maritime Board Nikolai Patrushev in an interview with the Russian newspaper Argumenty i Fakty.

The exercises, initiated by Iran’s navy, aim to strengthen maritime security, expand cooperation in combating piracy and maritime terrorism, and conduct coordinated search-and-rescue operations.

The Maritime Security Belt drills have been held annually since 2019 at Iran’s initiative. According to official statements, the exercises are intended to safeguard global trade routes in one of the world’s most strategically significant maritime passages.

Naval units from the three countries are expected to participate with a range of vessels and operational capabilities. The drills will test coordination, tactical readiness and rapid-response procedures in the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials have emphasised that the exercises demonstrate regional security cooperation and a commitment to protecting international shipping lanes.
