Historic Sannazaro theatre in Naples destroyed by fire Photo
A fire gutted the interior of the historic wood-framed Teatro Sannazaro in the affluent Chiaia district of Italy's Naples on February 17, officials said.
The blaze is believed to have started in a nearby apartment block before rapidly spreading to the 19th-century theatre, causing its domed roof to collapse and destroying the plush stalls and gilded boxes, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
"Very little of the theatre remains. Inside there are still some small hotspots that we will extinguish shortly. As for the causes, it's still too early to say," Naples fire commander Giuseppe Paduano told reporters.
Naples Mayor Gaetano Manfredi said that initial indications suggested the blaze had started accidentally. Residents reported thick smoke engulfing the neighbourhood from dawn, forcing the evacuation of 22 families from surrounding buildings. Four people were taken to hospital after inhaling smoke, but there were no reports of deaths or serious injuries.
Manfredi described the loss of the theatre as "a great sorrow" and "a deep wound" to the city's history and culture. He added, "We will do everything we can to help the owners rebuild," noting that the central government would also contribute to reconstruction.
The Teatro Sannazaro, which opened in 1847, has hosted many of Italy’s most famous actors and playwrights. Its current programme included classical musical recitals alongside visiting stage productions.
