Russia declares Estonian PM wanted for desecration of history

13 February 2024 15:18

Russian President’s Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov has said that outrage against historical memory and enmnity towards Russia have become the reasons for declaring Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and several other officials from the Baltic states wanted.

"These are the people who are responsible for decisions that are actually an abuse of historical memory. And these are the people who are taking hostile actions against both historical memory and our country," Kommersant quotes the Kremlin spokesperson as saying.

In addition to Ms Kallas, the Russian Interior Ministry's database now contains information on the wanted list of Estonian State Secretary Taimar Peterkop, Lithuanian Culture Minister Simonas Kairis and several members of the Latvian Saeima. According to Kommersant's sources, the criminal case is being investigated by the main investigative department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

Last year Estonian President Alar Karis refused to sign amendments to the building code on the demolition of Soviet monuments. In January 2024, the Estonian parliament rejected a bill to dismantle the monument to Soviet soldiers in Tallinn, known as the Bronze Soldier.
