Iran intensifies efforts to secure Russian gas supply
Iran is actively working to secure a supply of Russian gas, according to Kazem Jalali, the Iranian Ambassador to Russia.
When asked about the ongoing gas projects between Moscow and Tehran in an interview with Russian media, Jalali outlined the cooperation areas, as per Caliber.Az.
“We have cooperation with our Russian colleagues in the energy sector,” Jalali said. “Firstly, this involves Russian investments in Iran’s oil fields. We are also interested in developing gas cooperation. Another option is the presence of Russian partners in Iranian fields. Additionally, we are exploring the possibility of Russian gas being supplied to Iran, which would allow us to work together on joint projects.”
Jalali further confirmed that preliminary agreements have been made, and a formal contract has been signed. “Recently, preliminary agreements have been reached, we have signed an agreement on this issue, and we are continuing on this path to get Russian gas to our territory,” he emphasized.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also addressed the issue during a plenary session at the IX Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok on September 6. “Iran has been asking us for gas for a long time,” Putin remarked. “I believe this project is quite feasible because the demand for gas in the region is substantial, and neighbouring countries also have significant needs.”
Putin noted that Gazprom has managed to restore gas export volumes to meet economic growth targets despite challenges such as the Nord Stream pipeline explosion, sanctions, and regional conditions. “There are various opportunities in the gas sector,” Putin said. “We will develop new markets, work on swaps, supply gas in liquefied form, and gradually restore our sales volumes.”
