Armenia registers new cases of infection with West Nile virus

25 August 2025 14:58

Since early 2025, Armenia has registered two cases of West Nile fever (WNF), a disease caused by a virus transmitted by mosquitoes, according to the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention under Armenia’s Health Ministry.

The Center said the first case this year was detected on June 3, Caliber.Az says, quoting Armenian media.

The authorities assured that the current epidemiological situation in the country remains stable.

However, the European health system warns of a high risk of mosquito-borne diseases due to rising temperatures and increased global heat levels.

About 80% of those infected with WNF show no symptoms.

Clinical manifestations of the disease can include headache, myalgia, rash, arthralgia, dizziness, and in severe cases, meningitis, encephalitis, as well as signs of central or peripheral nervous system involvement.

Armenian media recall that the first known case of this viral infection in Armenia was reported on August 21, 2024.
