Russia, Iran vow closer energy, security ties in high-level call
Russian President Vladimir Putin held a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to discuss a range of bilateral and regional issues, the Kremlin announced.
During the call, President Putin briefed his Iranian counterpart on the key outcomes of the recent high-level Russian-American summit held in Anchorage, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
"A telephone conversation took place between President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin and President of the Islamic Republic of Iran Masoud Pezeshkian, during which Vladimir Putin informed him of the main outcomes of the recent Russian-American summit held in Anchorage," the Kremlin said in an official statement.
The two leaders also exchanged views on the status of Iran’s nuclear program, as well as current dynamics in the South Caucasus—a region where both Russia and Iran hold considerable geopolitical interests. “The situation regarding Iran’s nuclear program and developments in the South Caucasus region were also addressed,” the statement noted.
Further discussions focused on strengthening Russian-Iranian cooperation, particularly in the fields of energy and transportation. According to the Kremlin, "a number of current issues on the bilateral agenda were discussed, including those related to energy and transport."
The conversation comes at a time of increased diplomatic activity between Moscow and Tehran, amid broader regional shifts and continued Western sanctions on both countries.
The two presidents agreed to meet in person at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, which will be held in China. The summit is expected to serve as a platform for deepening strategic cooperation among member states, especially in the face of shifting global alliances.
