Kremlin: Russia ready to mediate Middle East conflict
Russia has reiterated its readiness to help de-escalate the conflict in the Middle East, with Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that Moscow remains committed to a political and diplomatic resolution and is prepared to act as a mediator if called upon.
Speaking on April 2, Peskov said President Vladimir Putin consistently advocates resolving the crisis exclusively through non-military means. He noted that Putin has repeatedly conveyed this position during telephone conversations with leaders of the Persian Gulf and Arab states, maintaining ongoing diplomatic engagement with the region.
According to Peskov, Russia continues these contacts and stands ready to contribute to peace efforts should its involvement be requested. “The president continues these contacts,” he said, emphasising that Moscow is willing to play a role in shifting the situation from active hostilities to a peaceful settlement. “If our services are in demand, we are ready to make our contribution so that the situation moves to a peaceful course as soon as possible. This is our main position.”
Peskov also highlighted the potential role of a future Russia–Arab summit, which he said could serve as an important platform for reducing regional tensions and mitigating the consequences of the conflict surrounding Iran. He stressed that de-escalation and limiting the fallout from the war can only be achieved through negotiations and dialogue.
“At present, this is not an issue for the immediate future, for understandable reasons,” he said, while adding that such a summit could become a valuable mechanism for diplomatic engagement over time.
In addition, Peskov confirmed that the Kremlin had taken note of remarks by US President Donald Trump, who stated that the military operation against Iran is nearing completion, with its objectives largely achieved.
“Like the entire world, we reviewed President Trump’s statement this morning,” Peskov said when asked about the comments.
