Iran confirms coordination with Russia, China to counter snapback mechanism
Iran is actively coordinating with Russia and China to prevent European countries from misusing the UN Security Council’s snapback mechanism, the country’s Foreign Ministry said.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei emphasised that Iran has never sought to downplay the UN mechanism but is fully aware of its potential negative consequences, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
He stressed that European parties lack the legal and ethical authority to invoke the snapback, and Iran neither recognises it nor ignores its possible repercussions.
Baqaei added that Iran’s diplomatic apparatus has implemented a clear strategy to prevent Europe from exploiting the mechanism as a tool of psychological warfare against public opinion. Current initiatives include ongoing talks in Geneva, communications between the Iranian Foreign Minister and European counterparts, and consultations with Russia and China.
A new round of nuclear negotiations between Iran and the UK, France, and Germany is scheduled to take place in Geneva on August 26.
The so-called “snapback” mechanism allows for the automatic reimposition of UN sanctions on Iran if it is found to be in significant noncompliance with the 2015 nuclear agreement.
