Russia, IAEA hold consultations in Moscow on nuclear safety issues
Interagency consultations between representatives of Russia and the International Atomic Energy Agency have begun in Moscow, with the talks taking place at the Atom Museum.
According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the information was confirmed by the state nuclear corporation Rosatom.
The Russian delegation is led by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev, while the delegation of the International Atomic Energy Agency is headed by the agency’s Director General Rafael Grossi.
The two sides held a personal meeting in Moscow a day earlier, during which they discussed strengthening the global nuclear non-proliferation regime and broader trends in the development of nuclear energy worldwide.
Likhachev said the current round of consultations is intended to align positions on a number of complex issues. Among the key topics is the situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant and the nearby satellite city of Enerhodar.
Russia also plans to brief the agency on the situation at the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant in Iran. Moscow expects support from the IAEA in ensuring the safety of the plant’s operational facilities, the power units currently under construction and Russian specialists involved in the project.
In addition to representatives of Rosatom, the Russian delegation includes officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia, the Ministry of Defence of Russia, the Russian National Guard and the Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision.
