EU court rejects Russian billionaire’s sanctions challenge

09 September 2026 14:21

The Court of Justice of the European Union has rejected Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich’s lawsuit challenging his inclusion on the EU sanctions list, according to the court’s press service. The ruling leaves his assets frozen under EU sanctions.

Following the full-scale invasion, the Council of the European Union froze the assets of businesspeople operating in economic sectors considered a significant source of revenue for the Russian government and banned them from entering or transiting through EU territory.

Russian businessman Roman Abramovich filed lawsuits with the Court of Justice of the European Union challenging his inclusion on the sanctions list and seeking compensation for moral damages. However, the court rejected his lawsuits in December 2023 and September 2025. The EU Council subsequently adopted new acts extending the sanctions, first until September 15, 2025, and then until March 15, 2026.
