Armenian MP quits parliament for regional leadership role
Armenian Member of Parliament of the ruling Civil Contract faction, Aren Mkrtchyan, has officially resigned from his legislative mandate.
Mkrtchyan’s departure from the National Assembly comes as part of a broader political transition within Armenia’s governing ranks, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
The resignation follows an announcement by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who revealed plans to appoint Mkrtchyan as the new governor of Lori Province, a strategically significant region in northern Armenia.
Mkrtchyan was elected to the National Assembly in 2018. From June 2 to June 27, 2019, he served as a member of the Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs. Subsequently, beginning June 27, 2019, he joined the Standing Committee on Defence and Security.
During the 7th convocation of the National Assembly, he also participated as a member of the parliamentary friendship group of the Republic of Armenia.
