Operation Euphrates Shield was a military campaign launched by Türkiye in northern Syria from August 24, 2016, to March 29, 2017. One of the primary goals was to combat the Islamic State (IS) in northern Syria, particularly to push the group away from the Turkish-Syrian border and prevent its encroachment into Türkiye.
Türkiye sought to curtail the influence and expansion of Kurdish militant groups, particularly the Syrian Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG), which it views as an extension of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group that has waged a long-standing insurgency against Türkiye. Türkiye aimed to create a "safe zone" along the border to protect civilians and provide a buffer against both IS and Kurdish forces.
