Armenia’s EU future hinges on application as peace talks advance, says envoy
Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos, commented on Armenia’s potential accession to the European Union, as well as the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Maragos emphasized the formal nature of EU accession procedures, underscoring that membership requires clear adherence to established criteria, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
“The rules for joining the EU are very clear. There are specific criteria: consensus among member states is essential, and candidate countries must formally submit applications for membership. In Armenia’s case, such an application has not yet been made. Therefore, if and when that moment arrives, the established rules must be respected,” he explained.
Turning to regional stability, Maragos highlighted the positive developments stemming from recent diplomatic engagements. “We welcomed the agreements reached in Washington and the initialing of the peace agreement, which represent a solid foundation for progress,” he stated.
Expressing cautious optimism, he added, “I hope the peace agreement can be signed in the near future. The EU is prepared to actively support efforts to promote peace and stability in the region.”
Maragos also acknowledged that the success of these initiatives ultimately depends on the political will and cooperation of the peoples and governments involved. “While it is the peoples of the region who will determine the outcome, we stand ready to assist in any way we can. As the EU representative in Armenia, I affirm that we collectively believe and hope all parties will honor their commitments,” he concluded.
