Money flows from Russia to Georgia plunge 27%

16 September 2025 10:01

The volume of money transfers flowing into Georgia continued to rise in 2025, though transfers from Russia fell sharply, highlighting shifting trends in the country’s remittance landscape.

The data published by the National Bank of Georgia indicates that money transfers to Georgian commercial banks via electronic systems amounted to $2,373.6 million between January and August 2025, reflecting a 5.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media outlets.

Remittances play a vital role in Georgia’s economy, contributing to household incomes and supporting domestic consumption.

The United States emerged as the largest source of remittances, underscoring the growing role of the Georgian diaspora in North America.

By contrast, inflows from Russia — traditionally a major contributor — saw a notable decline. In the January–July 2025 period, Georgia received $304.9 million from Russia, accounting for 12.8% of total remittances. This represented a 26.9% decrease compared to the same period of 2024.

The downward trend from Russia continued into late summer. In August 2025, total money transfers to Georgia rose by 10.7% year-on-year, reaching $321.6 million. Of this, $41.3 million originated from Russia, making up 12.9% of the monthly inflows. However, even this monthly figure was 2.9% lower than in August 2024.
