Armenia withdraws support for declaration on ICC warrant for Putin
Armenia has retracted its endorsement of a Council of Europe (CoE) declaration that supports the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for the arrest of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This change was noted in the final version of the document, which was recently published on the CoE's website, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
The declaration, which was initially backed by a range of countries including Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Ukraine, Moldova, the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Great Britain, and Georgia, expresses support for the ICC's decision. However, Armenia's signature, which was present in the draft version of the document, is now conspicuously absent.
The Armenian government has yet to provide an official statement regarding its decision to withdraw from the declaration. The move has raised questions about Armenia's stance on the international legal process concerning President Putin.
The declaration outlines principles for addressing key justice issues related to the conflict in Ukraine. The document was adopted by justice ministers from CoE member states and observer countries at a meeting chaired by Lithuania. The principles included in the declaration are advisory in nature.
Azerbaijan, Türkiye, Hungary, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, and Serbia have abstained from supporting the document.
