Azerbaijani president pays tribute to Khojaly genocide victims with minute of silence

26 February 2024 17:47

At 17:00 on February 26, President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev paid tribute to the victims of the Khojaly genocide by observing a minute of silence.

On February 26, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev made a significant visit to Khojaly to honour the memory of the victims of the Armenia-perpetuated genocide and to partake in a groundbreaking ceremony in the town. The visit marks a solemn occasion for Azerbaijan, as it reflects upon the tragic events of the past while also symbolizing a step towards progress and development in the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azertag.

President Aliyev paid homage to the victims of the Khojaly genocide, which occurred on February 26, 1992, during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. The genocide resulted in the massacre of hundreds of Azerbaijani civilians, including women, children, and the elderly, by Armenian forces. By visiting Khojaly on the anniversary of this atrocity, the President reiterated Azerbaijan's commitment to preserving the memory of those who lost their lives and seeking justice for the atrocities committed against its people.

In addition to commemorating the victims of the Khojaly genocide, President Aliyev laid a foundation stone for the Khojaly genocide memorial in the city of Khojaly. The ceremony marked the beginning of a new phase of development and reconstruction in Khojaly, demonstrating Azerbaijan's commitment to revitalizing areas affected by the conflict and improving the lives of its citizens.
