Austrian MPs updated on prospects for Azerbaijan-Armenia peace process
POLITICS 04 March 2024 - 21:05
Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova has met with a delegation led by Andreas Minnich, head of the Austria-South Caucasus parliamentary friendship group of Austrian Parliament, who is on a visit to the country.
Speaker Gafarova described Azerbaijan and Austria as friendly and partner countries, saying reciprocal high-level visits and constant political dialogue are important for further development of ties between the two countries, Milli Majlis told AZERTAC.
She emphasized the importance of relations between legislative bodies in the development of bilateral relations.
The issues of intensification of contacts between friendship groups operating in the parliaments, possibilities of cooperation between the committees of legislative bodies were also discussed at the meeting.
Pointing out double standards applied to Azerbaijan by some international organizations, the Milli Majlis speaker said that Azerbaijan liberated its lands by its own forces in 2020.
Gafarova said that Azerbaijan faced double standards, and that Islamophobia and Azerbaijanophobia reign in a number of organizations. At the same time, she condemned PACE's failure to ratify the credentials of the Azerbaijani delegation, saying that this step is another example of double standards.
The speaker also provided an insight into the current situation in the region and the prospects for the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Head of the Austria-South Caucasus parliamentary friendship group Andreas Minnich underlined the purpose of his trip to Azerbaijan and the meetings held as part of the visit. He noted that these meetings play an important role in the development of ties between the parliaments.
The Austrian MP conveyed congratulations on Azerbaijan’s election as the host of COP29 and shared his view on further development of cooperation between the countries in a number of areas.
The sides also exchanged views on other issues of mutual interest.
