Azerbaijan gears up for COP29 with NGO-driven initiatives

Azerbaijan's Deputy Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Umayra Taghiyeva has emphasised that preparation for COP29, slated for November 2024 and to be hosted by Azerbaijan, is actively underway.

Taghiyeva made these remarks during a briefing focused on the "International Initiatives related to COP29" competition, highlighting the complexity of climate change as an increasingly significant global challenge, Caliber.Az informs citing the local media.

"Unfortunately, climate change has emerged as a major issue recently. We are currently fully engaged in preparation for COP29," she stated.

Taghiyeva also highlighted the announcement of a grant competition aimed at incorporating the perspectives, ideas, and contributions of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in COP29.

Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
