Ombudsperson announces Baku as host for international human rights conference
Baku will be the venue for an international conference on human rights this October, according to Azerbaijan's Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsperson), Sabina Aliyeva.
She made this announcement at the opening of the "Law and Climate’" international conference in Baku, Caliber.Az reports referring to local media.
"The upcoming conference, aligned with COP29, will attract state officials and leaders from international organizations," Aliyeva noted adding that it will address various human rights issues, with a focus on climate change.
Aliyeva highlighted that Azerbaijan’s Constitution guarantees the right to a healthy environment, emphasizing the importance of ecological protection and addressing environmental challenges. She noted that hosting such a significant event underscores international confidence in Azerbaijan.
"Protection of ecology and identification of causes of environmental problems, search for ways to solve them are important conditions. COP is of special importance in the fight against climate change. Holding this event in Azerbaijan is an indicator of confidence in our country," she noted.
Additionally, Aliyeva pointed out that war significantly impacts the environment, referencing Armenia's mining pollution and resource exploitation during and after the conflict. "The world community has been informed about Armenia's mine pollution of Azerbaijani territories, and plundering of natural resources during the war and post-war period," Aliyeva said.
