Azerbaijan holds safety drills ahead of Formula 1 Grand Prix Photo

26 July 2025 16:54

Authorities in Azerbaijan are stepping up preparations for the upcoming Formula 1 Grand Prix in Baku by conducting specialised training sessions for race marshals.

The Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) and the Baku City Circuit Operating Company have jointly held the latest in a series of training exercises aimed at enhancing emergency response capabilities during the high-profile motorsport event, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The sessions are designed to test the effectiveness of emergency response plans, as well as operational and coordination measures, ahead of the Grand Prix scheduled for September 19–21.

Lieutenant Colonel Elvin Agayev, Head of Operational Planning at the MES, said that around 200 marshals are taking part, including 60 professional firefighters from the ministry.

“The aim of the training is to rehearse fire prevention measures during the races and raise the overall preparedness of the marshals,” he told reporters.

This marks the third such joint training session to date, with several more scheduled in the lead-up to the race weekend.

Officials say that more than 30 specialised vehicles and approximately 400 MES personnel will be deployed during the three-day event to ensure safety and rapid response in case of emergencies.

Since 2016, Baku has hosted Formula 1 at the 6 km Baku City Circuit, entering the calendar initially as the European Grand Prix and becoming the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 2017 onwards.

Designed by Hermann Tilke, the street circuit features 20 turns winding through historic Icherisheher, along the Caspian waterfront and past Azadliq Square, including a high‑speed 2.1–2.2 km straight where cars exceed 350 km/h.

Azerbaijan’s only F1 race boosts the country’s sporting and tourism profile, drawing fans from over 100 countries and frequently selling out grandstand tickets well before the event.

Known for unpredictable drama and tight finishes, the Baku Grand Prix has earned its place as one of the most exciting rounds on the F1 calendar.
