Azerbaijan’s PreCOP 2024: October talks to drive global climate agenda
Azerbaijan will hold a PreCOP event on October 10-11, as announced by Rustam Hasanov, Advisor to the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, during the second session of the International Conference "Law and Climate".
Hasanov indicated that the PreCOP event will bring together ecology ministers from countries participating in COP29, where they will discuss the event's agenda and address forthcoming issues, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Azerbaijan is set to host COP29 in November, a decision confirmed during the COP28 plenary in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Baku is expected to welcome around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests, positioning itself as a central hub for global climate discussions.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to address human impacts on the climate system. The Conference of the Parties (COP), consisting of 198 member countries, oversees the UNFCCC's implementation. COP meetings are held annually, with the first meeting in Berlin in March 1995 and the secretariat based in Bonn.
COP29 will focus on global climate change mitigation, including adherence to the Paris Agreement, transitioning to alternative energy sources, and improving recycling and waste management practices.
Azerbaijan, facing climate challenges such as droughts and declining water levels in the Caspian Sea and Kura River, will use COP29 to highlight these issues. The country aims to promote significant climate action, increase the use of renewable energy, and enhance recycling efforts. Azerbaijan has pledged to boost its use of alternative energy sources to 30% by 2030 and improve recycling capabilities to reduce pollution.
