Azerbaijan border guards foil drug smuggling attempts from Iran PHOTO

Azerbaijan’s State Border Service has intercepted two significant shipments of narcotics smuggled from Iran into Azerbaijan using unmanned aerial and gliding equipment.

The incidents occurred on September 6 and were detected by officers of the Horadiz border detachment, the State Border Service told Caliber.Az.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., border guards detected a shipment reportedly being transported by drone. Officers seized 21.7 kilograms of narcotics and 1,000 tablets of the psychotropic drug Methadone M-40.

A second shipment was detected at around 4:10 a.m. after allegedly being transported across the border by paraglider. The seizure included 17.078 kilograms of narcotics and 6,680 Methadone M-40 tablets.

The total seizures amounted to approximately 38.8 kilograms of narcotics and 7,680 Methadone M-40 tablets.

Operational and investigative measures are currently underway to establish the circumstances of the attempted smuggling and identify those involved.
