Kremlin hopes for Armenia's political wisdom in ties with West

25 July 2024 09:17

Russia has expressed hope for Armenia's political wisdom in navigating its relations with the West, according to Dmitry Peskov, the official representative of the Kremlin. Speaking to reporters, Peskov commented on the European Union's recent decision to provide Yerevan with funds from the European Peace Facility.

“Armenia is a sovereign country that chooses its own priority areas of interaction. It is our ally, a brotherly country,” Peskov emphasized, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Peskov underscored Russia's respect for Armenia's independent decision-making while highlighting the close ties between the two nations. "We are counting on Armenia's political wisdom. We have, so to speak, respect for such endeavours," he stated.

The Kremlin spokesperson also expressed hope that Armenia would consider the available alternatives when charting its future course. "We respect this search, but we would not want this search to be carried out in the way that the Kyiv regime once chose," Peskov remarked, drawing a comparison with Ukraine's geopolitical choices.

Peskov reiterated Russia's commitment to fostering strong relations with Armenia. "We have many plans," he said, hinting at ongoing and future cooperation between the two countries.

Earlier, Peskov had cautioned Armenia against following Ukraine's path, stressing Yerevan's autonomy in selecting its priority areas of cooperation. "Armenia is a sovereign country that chooses its own priority areas of interaction. It is our ally, a brotherly country," he reiterated during his comments on the sidelines of the New Media Festival.
