Türkiye expresses interest in joining BRICS to support multipolar world

26 July 2024 10:55

Türkiye has expressed a desire to join the BRICS group of emerging economies, highlighting its support for a multipolar world order.

This aspiration was discussed by columnist Haryanto Martaha in an article for InfoBRICS, according to a report by Caliber.Az, citing foreign media sources.

Martaha explained that Ankara aims to bolster its independence from various Western institutions, including NATO and the European Union. The article also noted that Türkiye often encounters financial difficulties due to the influence of international financial institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"BRICS supports multipolarity and fair global governance, making it an appealing platform for Türkiye," Martaha stated, reflecting on the potential benefits of Türkiye's membership in the group.

However, Martaha also pointed out significant obstacles to Türkiye's accession to BRICS. These challenges include pressure from Western countries and domestic political complexities that could hinder the process.

The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is known for its focus on promoting economic cooperation and a more balanced global order. Türkiye's interest in joining the group signals its strategic intent to diversify its alliances and reduce reliance on Western-centric organizations.
