Al-Hadath: Trump unveils Middle East peace plan aimed at ending Gaza war
The United States has presented a new peace plan aimed at ending the nearly two-year-long war in the Gaza Strip.
Details of the plan were released by Al Arabiya and Al Hadath, and U.S. officials say it is intended to bring about an immediate cessation of hostilities and address humanitarian concerns in the territory, Caliber.Az reports.
According to the plan, the war in Gaza would end in exchange for the release of hostages held in the Strip, along with the release of between 100 and 200 Palestinian prisoners serving long sentences.
The plan also proposes offering Hamas amnesty if the group withdraws from Gaza and surrenders its weapons, which would then be collected by an international Arab force within a designated timeframe.
The proposal calls for the closure of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation and guarantees the immediate and unrestricted entry of humanitarian aid, a responsibility that would be overseen by the United Nations and other international organisations. It also outlines a gradual Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, including the creation of safe passages for residents, leading to a full withdrawal according to a specified timetable.
Reconstruction of Gaza is envisioned over a five-year period through an international coalition. The plan further proposes establishing a Palestinian security force to manage the Strip under Arab and international supervision, alongside a Palestinian committee to administer local affairs on behalf of the Palestinian Authority. An Arab-led international body would temporarily oversee Gaza’s administration.
The plan reportedly emphasises that the United States does not intend to annex the West Bank. Sources familiar with the discussions said the plan will be conveyed to Hamas through Qatari mediators and may be subject to modifications.
The 21-point plan was presented to several Arab and Islamic leaders during a meeting with US President Donald Trump and his Middle east envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Septrember 23.
Earlier, Trump expressed optimism about reaching a resolution in Gaza. Before departing the White House to attend the Ryder Cup in New York, he said he was close to “reaching an agreement to end the war in Gaza and return the hostages home,” adding that the return of the hostages could be imminent.
Currently, approximately 45 Israeli hostages remain in Gaza, with more than half believed dead, according to Israeli estimates. Meanwhile, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has surpassed 60,000, and famine has spread in several areas, the United Nations has reported.
