Aliyev-Trump call renews focus on Washington-backed peace process
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and US President Donald Trump discussed regional peace, the TRIPP project and Azerbaijan-US strategic ties during a phone call on August 8, marking the anniversary of the Washington Peace Summit.
During the phone conversation, both leaders expressed satisfaction on the occasion of the anniversary of the Washington Summit. They emphasized that the Joint Declaration signed during the Washington Peace Summit in the presence of US President Donald Trump, along with the initialing of the agreement on the establishment of interstate relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, had brought an end to the conflict in the region and consolidated peace, Caliber.Az reports via state media.
President Ilham Aliyev thanked Donald Trump for hosting the Washington Peace Summit and for his contribution to the peace agenda.
Trump, in turn, highly appreciated Aliyev’s role in the peace process.
The sides expressed satisfaction that peace and stability had been maintained in the region over the past year, with no incidents that could undermine regional peace.
The presidents also noted the export of Azerbaijani oil products to Armenia, the transit of cargo through Azerbaijan to Armenia, and the launch of trade relations between the two countries as positive developments.
The importance of the TRIPP project for regional connectivity was emphasized during the conversation, with the sides noting that work on transport infrastructure in Azerbaijan was nearing completion.
They also expressed hope that work on the TRIPP project in Armenia would break ground soon.
The heads of state discussed issues related to the bilateral agenda as well.
The signing of the document on strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the United States was described as a historic event. The presidents emphasized that Azerbaijan-US relations had reached a qualitatively new and higher level and acquired a strategic character, contributing to peace and stability across the broader region.
Aliyev thanked the US President for the invitation to the G20, describing it as a manifestation of the friendly attitude toward Azerbaijan.
The two leaders expressed confidence that the Azerbaijan-US strategic partnership would continue to develop successfully.
