President Aliyev receives Estonia’s newly appointed ambassador to Azerbaijan PHOTO

Azerbaijan and Estonia have discussed expanding bilateral ties, with the opening of Estonia’s embassy in Baku expected to contribute to closer cooperation.

President Ilham Aliyev received Estonia’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Tiina Nirk, in Baku on September 23, Caliber.Az reports, citing state media.

Nirk presented her credentials to the Azerbaijani president before the two held talks on bilateral relations and areas of mutual interest.

Aliyev stressed the importance of reciprocal visits and contacts at various levels in developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and Estonia.

The Azerbaijani president also highlighted the development of relations between Azerbaijan and the European Union, noting visits to Azerbaijan this year by European Council President António Costa, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.

Nirk said she was honoured to become Estonia’s first ambassador to Azerbaijan and pledged to work to strengthen relations between the two countries, as well as ties between Azerbaijan and the EU.

She pointed to Azerbaijan’s strategic position along the Middle Corridor and said there was significant potential for cooperation in political dialogue, business, information technology, logistics and other areas.

The Estonian ambassador also highlighted opportunities for educational cooperation, noting that nearly 200 Azerbaijani students are currently studying in Estonia.

Nirk further praised Azerbaijan’s humanitarian assistance to Ukraine.

The sides said the opening of the Estonian Embassy in Azerbaijan would contribute to the further development of bilateral relations. They also discussed the work of the Azerbaijan-Estonia Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Trade Cooperation and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.

Aliyev wished the ambassador success in her diplomatic activities.
