Ambassador: Taliban allies with Russia against terrorism
In a significant statement, Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan Dmitry Zhirnov emphasized the Taliban's active role in combating terrorism, portraying them as crucial partners in Russia's efforts against extremist threats.
Zhirnov highlighted that the Taliban are actively working to dismantle terrorist networks operating within Afghanistan, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
He pointed out that captured terrorists are transferred to Pul-i-Charkhi, Afghanistan's largest prison located on the outskirts of Kabul, where they are held in solitary confinement.
Describing the imposing sight of Pul-i-Charkhi from an aeroplane window, Zhirnov underscored its symbolic role as a deterrent to terrorists.
"The round structure is quite imposing when viewed from above — a stark reminder to terrorists of the consequences of their actions," Zhirnov remarked.
In March 2022, Russia formally accredited its first diplomat from the Taliban government, a move reflecting ongoing diplomatic engagement. This comes alongside the operation of a Russian embassy in Kabul, indicating a structured diplomatic presence in Afghanistan.
By June of the same year, the Taliban delegation participated in the prestigious St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
This year's SPIEF, from June 5-8, saw continued involvement from Taliban representatives, highlighting their ongoing engagement in international forums.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed Russia's regular communications with the Taliban, emphasizing discussions regarding the recognition of their government. Lavrov stressed that such recognition hinges on the Taliban fulfilling key commitments: establishing an inclusive government and addressing differences with groups like the National Resistance Front, active in northern Afghanistan.
