Armenia's security service procures saddles, equipment for border patrol
The National Security Service of Armenia (NSS) has purchased 45 horse saddles in a contract worth around 3.5 million drams (approximately $9,000).
Additionally, the NSS has acquired horseshoes, nails, and other essential horse gear through various contracts, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.
The agency has also procured armguards, protective suits for dog training, and containers for transporting dogs.
According to media reports, these items are likely destined for the Border Guard, which falls under the authority of Armenia's National Security Service.
For decades, in many countries patrol has utilised horses for border enforcement, valuing their "tactical elevation advantage" for improved visibility.
Horses, which can serve for up to 17 years, offer a distinct advantage over vehicles that have a shorter lifespan. They excel in navigating difficult terrains, such as steep rock faces and dense brush, where ATVs and trucks struggle.
Additionally, horses are seen as environmentally friendly compared to the noisy intrusion of quads and jeeps.
