Iran steps up UN campaign to hold Israel accountable for war crimes

01 July 2025 12:50

Iran has intensified efforts to hold Israel accountable for alleged war crimes committed during the recent 12-day conflict.

A specialized committee, operating under the auspices of the Vice President for Legal Affairs, has been established to meticulously collect and document evidence for presentation to the United Nations, Fatemeh Mohajerani, spokeswoman of the government of Iran said, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.

Mohajerani confirmed that Tehran has initiated formal correspondence with the UN Security Council and various human rights organizations since June 27.

“Naturally, what the Zionist regime has done is a crime in itself,” Mohajerani stated, emphasizing Iran’s determination to pursue justice through international mechanisms.

The evidence-gathering process remains ongoing under the supervision of the dedicated committee, which is tasked with compiling comprehensive documentation of alleged violations. According to Mohajerani, official letters have already been exchanged with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and pertinent UN agencies, signaling Iran’s commitment to elevating the issue on the global stage.

Moreover, the United Nations Security Council has convened three meetings specifically addressing the matter, reflecting the international community’s growing attention to the situation.

An intense 12‑day conflict between Israel and Iran erupted on June 13, 2025, after Israel launched air strikes on Iranian military and nuclear sites, killing key nuclear scientists and military commanders.

More than 200 Israeli fighter jets hit more than 100 nuclear and military facilities along with residential neighbourhoods across Iran.

Iran retaliated with hundreds of ballistic missiles against Israeli cities. In the days that followed, Israel and Iran traded missiles as casualties mounted on both sides.

The United States entered the military clash on June 22 with bunker-buster strikes on Iran’s Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan nuclear facilities.

A fragile ceasefire was brokered by the US on June 24, hours after Iran had fired missiles at its largest airbase in the Middle East, based in Qatar.
