Armenian Prosecutor General moves to strip opposition MP of immunity
Armenian Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan is preparing to submit a formal request to the National Assembly to strip opposition MP Artur Sargsyan of his parliamentary immunity.
The development was confirmed by Speaker of the Armenian Parliament, Alen Simonyan, who stated that although he has not yet received the official application from the Prosecutor General’s office, he anticipates that the process to revoke Sargsyan’s immunity will soon be initiated, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
Simonyan refrained from providing further details on the matter.
Earlier reports from Armenian media indicated that Security Service officers conducted a search of Artur Sargsyan’s residence. Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a representative of the Dashnak party, revealed that the search was carried out in connection with the ongoing investigation involving the opposition faction “Armenia,” to which Sargsyan belongs.
According to media sources, the formal procedure to deprive Artur Sargsyan of his parliamentary immunity is expected to commence on July 4.
