Azerbaijan appoints president for COP29 climate conference

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has signed an order appointing Ecology Minister Mukhtar Babayev president of the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29). 

According to the document, he will also lead the 19th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol and the 6th session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Paris Agreement, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani president’s press service.

Mukhtar Babayev is empowered to form the composition of representatives responsible for the preparatory work and organisation of the chairmanship process.

On December 11, the participants of the plenary session of COP28 collectively backed the decision to confirm Azerbaijan as a host country of COP29. The event is scheduled for November in 2024.

In a government meeting on December 15, President Aliyev said around 70,000-80,000 foreign guests are expected to visit the two-week COP29 in Azerbaijan.
