Azerbaijan, Armenia leaders review peace progress one year after Washington Summit

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a phone conversation on August 8 to mark the first anniversary of the Washington Peace Summit, which paved the way for a new phase in relations between the two countries.

According to the Press Service of the President of Azerbaijan, Pashinyan initiated the call, during which the two leaders exchanged views on the developments since the August 8, 2025 summit held in Washington with the support of US President Donald Trump.

The leaders highlighted the significance of the summit and the initialling of the text of the Peace Agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. 

The sides particularly noted the important role played by President Donald Trump and the Government of the United States of America in advancing the peace process.

The sides noted the progress achieved over the past year in the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The conversation highlighted the development of trade and economic ties between the two countries as a tangible manifestation of the benefits of peace. In this context, the sides noted the export of Azerbaijani petroleum products to Armenia, as well as the transportation of transit cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan to Armenia and from Armenia to other destinations.

In addition, the sides exchanged views on the implementation of the TRIPP route in line with the understandings reached in Washington.

The sides emphasized the importance of continuing efforts to advance the peace process and ensure lasting peace, stability, connectivity, and economic cooperation in the region.
