Azerbaijan, Holy See advance interfaith dialogue at high-level talks in Baku PHOTO
President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev received Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue of the Holy See, George Jacob Koovakad, on June 16, in discussions that underscored the steady expansion of bilateral relations and Azerbaijan’s growing role in promoting global interfaith dialogue.
During the meeting, both sides emphasised the successful development of relations between Azerbaijan and the Holy See, highlighting the importance of reciprocal visits at various levels in advancing cooperation, Caliber.Az reports, citing the presidential website.
In this context, the significance of George Jacob Koovakad’s planned visit to Azerbaijan’s regions was noted.
Expressing gratitude for the reception and hospitality, the Prefect of the Dicastery for Interreligious Dialogue conveyed greetings from Pope Leo XIV and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin to the head of state.
President Ilham Aliyev expressed his appreciation for the greetings and asked for his own regards to be conveyed to the Pope and the Vatican Secretary of State.
The head of state fondly recalled his visit to the Vatican and his meeting with the late Pope Francis, as well as the Pope’s visit to Azerbaijan.
The discussions highlighted that representatives of all peoples and religions in Azerbaijan have historically lived together as one family in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect. The country’s contribution to the development of interreligious and intercultural dialogue at the global level, as a space of tolerance and multiculturalism, was also emphasised.
The activities of the Catholic Church in Azerbaijan under the Holy See were noted, including the construction of a second Catholic church in the country.
Cooperation between the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and the Holy See was also discussed, with particular reference to the Foundation’s projects in the Vatican aimed at preserving cultural heritage and promoting interfaith dialogue.
The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on the prospects for future cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Holy See and other issues of mutual interest.
At the end of the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev presented a letter of invitation addressed to Pope Leo XIV for a visit to Azerbaijan, which was delivered by George Jacob Koovakad.
