Azerbaijan, IEA plan third high-level dialogue on energy and climate
The third high-level "International Energy Agency (IEA)-COP29" dialogue is scheduled for September in New York.
Azerbaijan's COP29 President Mukhtar Babayev announced the meeting while speaking to local media adding that it follows the previous session held in London with IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol, Caliber.Az reports.
It should be noted that the dialogue, co-chaired by Birol and Babayev, aims to strengthen international consensus on strategies for energy development, achieving zero sectoral emissions, and limiting global warming to 1.5°C.
This initiative is conducted in close collaboration with the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change secretariat.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the UNFCCC will subsequently convene in Baku in November, following the decision made during COP28 in Dubai in December 2023.
Over a span of two weeks, Baku will welcome approximately 70,000–80,000 foreign guests, making it a focal point on the global stage.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. COP, short for Conference of Parties, serves as the highest legislative body overseeing the convention's implementation, with 198 countries currently party to the agreement. Unless otherwise decided, COP convenes annually, with the inaugural event held in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany, and its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
